Summary
[edit]DescriptionTrinity United Methodist Church, Madison Street and Hurlbet Street, Gibsonburg, OH - 52278739437.jpg |
English: Built in 1914, this Mission Revival and Romanesque Revival-style church was built to house the congregation of Trinity United Methodist Church, founded in 1837, and replaced an earlier church built in 1873. The church features a wire cut brick facade with a complex front parapet gable with a rusticated stone cap and decorative blind arch, arched stained glass windows with brick trim, buttresses on the sides, a tower with a complex parapet, arched vents, an arched canopy at the front door with a datestone, tapered buttresses at the base, a row of five adjoining small stained glass windows over the front entrance, a side wing with a hipped roof, chamfered corners, arched stained glass windows, and buttresses, and a concrete base. The church was expanded in 1958-59 with the addition of a Modern educational wing to the rear of the original structure, which features a red brick exterior, low-slope roof with aluminum-clad eaves, window bays with aluminum windows, recessed stucco spandrels, thin concrete canopies at the secondary entrances with decorative geometric breeze block screens, a main entrance with a large curtain wall and canopy, and a large cross mounted to the facade next to the front entrance. The church is aesthetically significant due to its design, but appears to be in the process of merging with another methodist congregation, which has a more modern church facility, and will likely lead to the eventual closure of this church. Hopefully, this beautiful and aesthetically significant church building will be able to find a new purpose if this is the case. |
