English: Trinity Close, Burstwick, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. A firefighter helps a displaced resident rescue some belongings from his flooded home on Trinity Close in Burstwick after the recent heavy rains, watched by a reporter from BBC Radio Humberside. The nearby Burstwick Drain and other smaller drains were unable to cope with the huge volume of water being channelled south and west towards the River Humber. The drains overflowed onto the surrounding farmland creating a shallow lake with very few patches of dry land in between, stretching for almost three kilometres from the greenhouses near Hall Bridge in Burstwick to the Villa Lane junction on the A1033 between Hedon and Thorngumbald. When this photograph was taken a valiant effort by the fire brigade had managed to lower the water level by a foot or more, despite the fact that a lack of local knowledge and detailed maps had led them to spend quite a lot of time pumping the water into Burstwick Drain at Hall Bridge just north of here, effectively feeding it back into the very lake they were trying to get rid of. |
