Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tring railway station: Railway Cottages A classic block of London & North Western Railway housing for their employees. The 1881 Census recorded the following heads of household as living in these properties:

John Leadbeater, aged 61, born Deanshanger, Northamptonshire, a railway engine driver and gas maker,

David Downs, aged 29, born Horton, Buckinghamshire, a railway signalman,

George Allnutt, aged 35, born Chinnor, Oxfordshire, a railway parcel porter,

John Johnson, aged 39, born Clapton, Northamptonshire, a railway signalman,

Arthur Thompson, aged 27, born Greenfield, Bedfordshire, a railway shunter (points man),

Joseph Dell, aged 40, born Aldbury, Hertfordshire, a goods porter,

Arthur Currell, aged 29, born Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, a railway signalman,

Joseph Humphrey, aged 29, born Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, a railway shunter,

George Leadbeater, aged 32, born Bradwell, Buckinghamshire, a railway signalman,

Thomas Holmes, aged 31, born East Woodley, Hampshire, a railway foreman porter,

James Johnson, aged 61, born Aldbury, Hertfordshire, an agricultural labourer,

John E Carpenter, aged 39, born Oxford, a railway foreman.

(Census information from the transcribed records of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so apologies for any errors).

There appear to be 11 cottages but 12 families..., but it is interesting to see how employment on the Victorian railway caused significant family upheaval and consequent mixing of the country's gene pool.
