Summary
[edit]DescriptionTrindade Theater (13953977679).jpg |
A view of the Trindade Theater (Teatro da Trindade) in the Barrio Alto section of Lisbon, Portugal. The theater opened on November 30, 1867 on the site of the Trindade Academy, an opera theater that was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that hit Lisbon. The theater soon offered the capital a taste of modern times such as the presentation of Edison’s phonograph or the narration of Serpa Pinto´s crossing of Africa and regular cinema sessions from the early 1900’s. The theater was almost destroyed in 1921 but was saved by a local businessman, José Loureiro, who purchased and refurbished the building, which was reopened to the public in February of 1924. The theater is currently supported and operated by the state-owned FNAT - Fundação Nacional Para a Alegria no Trabalho (National Foundation for Happiness at Work), which purchased the theater in 1962, and INATEL - Instituto Nacional para o Aproveitamento dos Tempos Livres dos Trabalhadores (National Institute for the Workers Spare Time). This building has a main room with 680 seats, a studio, a bar and a ceremony salon and is considered one of the best preserved examples of Italian style theaters in Portugal. The theater hosts a wide variety of performances, including plays, ballets, movies, and concerts. To see more photos from Portugal, visit the Portugal gallery on my web site.
