Beautifully carved, ornate three sanctum Hindu temple, 13th-century Kakatiya style

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Nagulapahad (Nagulapadu) village is about 25 kilometers south of Suryapet city. Several inscriptions suggest that it was a prosperous, major town before the 14th-century, on the east bank of Musi river.

The village has two major historic intricately carved but mutilated temples from the 13th-century. They are near one another but with a later era mosque between them that was partly built from parts and masonry from the damaged temples.

This temple has several inscriptions. Based on these, this trikuta temple (above) was built by Racherla Katireddy who names the three sanctums as Nameswara, Aytesvara and Kateswara.

The temple is built on a platform with a shared navaranga mandapa between the three sanctums. This is a Shiva temple.

The temple is notable for its beautiful carved females on the pillars and walls, secular and religious scenes, with jewelry like details. Most wear elegant clothes and hairdos, a few are nudes. The temple also has kama scenes, along with panels of Hindu legends (Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakti), once again with exquisite details. A lot of the art work inside the mandapa, is unfortunately, deliberately damaged (chopped faces, chopped limbs, chopped out sexual organs).

The temple has been partly restored, such as with a new Nandi.
