Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Trig point on Pappert Hill. The view here is along the line of a footpath that leads downhill from the summit. Beyond a dark line of distant trees, some houses can be seen; these are in the Vale of Leven, and are mainly in Alexandria and Tullichewan.

On the skyline in the centre background is a line of low hills and upland moors, starting with Carman Hill (697526) to the left, with Overtoun Muir, Bromley Muir, and Tullichewan Muir on the right.

Part of the modern housing scheme in NS4079 is named Pappert, after the hill. The name "Pappert Hill" is quite ancient; W.J.Watson, in his classic 1926 work "The Celtic Place-names of Scotland", mentions it:

"Perta, 'wood', 'copse', was the old name of several places in Gaul. ... In Welsh, perth is a bush, brake, copse, found with us in the name of the town and county of Perth, in Gaelic Peart, gen. Peairt. ... Pappert Hill in Dumbarton and Lanarkshire, and Pappert Law in Selkirk, probably have perth as their latter part."

(For keen students of place-names, http://www.spns.org.uk/bliton/perth.html and http://www.spns.org.uk/bliton/pant.html at the Scottish Place-name Society's website provide further information on the possible origins on this name.)
