Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tried Stone Baptist Church, 559 Woodlawn Avenue at Humboldt Parkway, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. The work of architect Howard Osgood Holland, this austere Gothic-styled edifice dates to 1906, when it was built as the second home of Second United Presbyterian Church, a congregation that traces its history to 1888, when it seceded from First Presbyterian Church upon the latter's decision to move from downtown to a new location on Symphony Circle that would have been inconvenient for those living east of Main Street. Second Presbyterian worshiped first at the future St. Lucy's Catholic Church on Swan Street, then at the building pictured here until 1920, when it moved a block north to a larger building on the corner of Humboldt Parkway and East Ferry Street. As of 1942, the Woodlawn Avenue church is recorded as having been home to the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, which previously existed on Jefferson Avenue. Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1944 by the Rev. Julius Birl Williamson; it's unclear whether it was located here at the outset or moved later, but it definitely occupied the building by the time of Rev. Williamson's 1989 funeral. The sign at left makes reference to the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing at the time the photo was taken.
