My Lord, and Gentlemen of the Jury, The case which, by the kind concession of mymuch more efficient colleagues, I am instructednow to lay before you, is one of so extraordinary anature, that I wonder not at the great interestwhich it seems to have excited. It is one of thosecases which is not limited to the individuals imme-diately concerned; it speaks to the feelings of everycircle of society from the highest to the lowest; italarms the very heart of the community, and com-mands the whole social family to the spot where in-sulted beauty, prostrate at your bar, calls aloud forpity and protection. Nominally, Gentlemen, youare empannelled to repair a private wrong, and awrong which is of as deadly a nature as humanwickedness can inflict; a wrong which annihilatesthe hope of the parent, and the happiness of thechild; which in one moment blights the fondestanticipations of the heart, and casts a death-likecoldness on the hearth within our bowers.
