for those with smaller purses, but desirous of a first-class house, the Southern Hotel, a commercial as well as tourist hotel, offers accommo- 584 the Top of the Ozarks. dations good enough for any one. This hotel is beautifully situated, withina short distance of the famous Basin Spring. W. E. Beatty, its proprietor, has made his hotel one of the pleasantest in the city for the visitor. Those who go to Eureka are not always sick. Many who are illrecover and then stay on. Returning health and an easy-going horse arecotemporaneous. All the afternoon and late into the evening one canhear the clatter of the hoofs, and the commonest scene is the group ofwomen with flushed faces and wind-blown hair who gather on verandasand tell each other where they have been and what a delightful how-many-miles it was. And, if any were needed, there are places to go. The reader willunderstand that it does not matter in the least about this. To go, to ride,to be out of doors—this is the only thing really.
Text Appearing After Image:
OL,D ARKANSAS. FARM NEAR EUREKA SPRINGS. Eureka Springs is exceedingly favored by nature for the successfultreatment of disease. What is generally known as malaria is unknowm. The flinty soil is porous, none of it is level, the drainage is complete. The place is nearly 2,000 feet above sea-level. It is sometimes cold inwinter, in the opinion of those who have always lived in the latitude andwho do not understand the term as a resident of the north does. It is alsosometimes warm in summer, and yet it is a cool and bracing health-and-pleasure resort to all who come from the south. The result is that the northerner is charmed with the, mildness of thewinter weather and the reasonable temperature of the summer, while peoplefrom the south are pleased with the coolness of the warmest months. Thebane of the invalid is climatic extremes—sudden and violent changes. These are unknown. The Publishers Desk. 585 PUBLISHERS DESK. Campho-Phenique.—Extract from a letter received from Dr. H. M.Starkl
