through the window on his right, and was reflected by the redcurtains, his sight failed to such an extent that he was unable to continuereading. Wearing blue glasses or closing the eyes for a short time alwaysbrought back the power of vision. In church he had frequently been dis-tressed by the red cushions, as well as by the red in the ladies bonnets, especially when the sun was shining in the windows, or when the gas waslit. Since 1885 his condition had remained practically unchanged. Oftenwhen walking quietly he had been brought suddenly to a standstill withgiddiness and weakness of the limbs merely by his eye being caught ob-liquely by the redness of a dress in a shop-window, or it might be by theparasol or red tie of a passer-by. At Bournemouth in 1892, where he wentfor a holiday, he found no ill-effects from the sun-light, and congratulatedhimself upon being able to look at red, even in the streets, without feelinganv discomfort. Soon after his return from Bournemouth his troubles

In 1893,even with dark glasses, the bright sun, especially if there were red-coloredobjects about, completely upset him when out of doors, bringing on a faint-ness which was most distressing; but, strange to say, in the house whileat rest, though the sun might be shining, he felt no discomfort. The sameyear he went to Eastbourne, and whilst there, he describes his conditionas that of a martyr. The burning sun overhead, with the red-bricks withwhich Eastbourne is paved, so affected him that he could not walk with-out assistance. He even felt some discomfort out of doors at night withthe electric light, but in the house he was as well as possible. This, briefly, is the medical history of this highly sensitive officer, ex-tending over thirty-four years. In the RE there are three dioptres ofhypermetropia, atristatemedicalj4189unse
