This diseasedcondition is brought about in several ways: 1. It may be the result of a severe conjunctivitis. 2. Catchingcold. 3. Acute and chronic infectious diseases of the eye. 4. Stricture ofthe tear-duct. 5. Diseased conditions within the nose. 6. Sex (much cry-ing; females indulging in this little pastimemore frequently ). 7. Erysipelas.8. Syphilis. (.». Tuberculosis. 10. Constriction of the lachrymal duct develops usually as the result of(a) inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane. Under this head maybe mentioned acute and chronic catarrh, whether one of simple nature orone of scrofulous or syphilitic origin. The swelling- of the submucouscavernous tissue may reach such a high degree as to press upon or by con-tinuity cause closure of the duct and, later, stricture. (/?) In the atrophicform of rhinitis we have no swelling, but a general cicatricial contractionof the whole mucous membrane of the nose, which may continue from thelower orifice into the duct itself, and thus lead to narrowing of its lumen.(c) Ulcers, by their healing and consequent cicatricial contraction.
