itutional manifestations in this disease are due to one of twoconditions, first, absorption into the circulation of ptomains elaborated by 532 Original Articles. the bacilli at the local seat of infection, or secondarily, by entrance of thebacilli into the circulation, through imperfect isolation, wherethrough theirlodgment in different organs they may induce symptoms not only as theresult of their ptomains but from organs there modifying the functions ofthe organs in which they grow. The symptoms as induced by their ptomains are much the same asseen in other forms of septic intoxication, such as elevation of temperatureand acceleration of pulse, associated with such modification of other func-tions as is observed in fever. These symptoms maybe looked upon as an in-toxication which will be of serious import in proportion to the quantitywhich has gained access to the circulation and the possibility of preventingthe entrance of further quantities. The constitutional manifestations in systemic infection with the bacilliare much those observed in our graver forms of septic infection with theaddition that haemorrhages from the mouth and nose may occur, associatedwith vomiting and a bloody diarrhoea; difficult respiration with cyanosis isat times seen, also the occurrance of small phlegmonous inflammations inthe skin may be observed in some instances. The gravity of systemic in-fection can not be overestimated as the specific causes of the disease arebeyond the action of any therapeutic measures we might employ.~: As to the pathology of the disease I know I need say little to you for Clinical Lecture-Anthrax-Jepson. 533 the tissue changes observed in the inflammation induced by the bacillus an-thracis are identical with those seen in inflammations as produced by othermicrobes
