A CASE OF ADENOMA OF THE MIDDLE EAR. By Bayard Holmes, B. S., M. D., of Chicago. Professor of Surgery in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago. MRS. A., 62 years old, gave the following history: When a girl ofeight she had scarlet fever, which was followed by suppurative^disease in the left ear, with discharge through the meatus for some time.When eighteen she fell from a swing and struck upon the head and became^unconscious. She had bleeding from the left ear for several days, and thiswas followed by a renewal of the old inflammation. After this time there-was always very imperfect hearing upon the left side. When twenty-three she took care of a case of diphtheria andsuffered from diphtheria, which gave symptoms indicating an extension ofthe disease to the middle ear. Ten years ago the attacks of suppuration ofthe middle ear became more acute, and an aurist was consulted, who re-moved a large number of polypi. During the course of eight or ten monthsthere was dreadful hemorrhage upon two or three occasions when polypiwere removed. At last the aurist refused further to treat the case, and re-ferred it to Dr.Charles T. Parks, who advised against an operation. At thistime the tumor, which was pulsating synchronously with the heart beats,was presenting itself in the external auditory meatus and was believed tc Original Articles. 339 be aneurismal or sarcomatous.
