Summary
[edit]DescriptionTresmeer railway station in 1995 (geograph 4099123).jpg |
English: Tresmeer railway station in 1995 The station building still exists and is in use as a private house. See Roger Geach's SX2288 : North Cornwall Railway former station Tresmeer for a more recent view. The station (not actually in Tresmeer; it's in a small hamlet called Splatt) was on the North Cornwall line, built by the North Cornwall Railway with backing from London & South Western Railway (LSWR) in stages over the period from 1882 to 1899. The challenging local terrain was mostly to blame for the slow progress of construction: the line approached Tresmeer from Egloskerry via any number of expensive embankments and cuttings, and the last few miles climbed at a gradient of around 1:75. This very nearly bankrupted the NCR, and they paused for a breather at Tresmeer, the station becoming the line's temporary terminus for just over a year. The line reached Tresmeer in 1892, ten years after the NCR had been granted the powers to build the line, and seven years before it finally reached its intended terminus at Padstow. It closed throughout on 3rd October 1966, although the Wadebridge - Padstow section remained open for freight traffic until the end of January 1967. |
