[edit]DescriptionTrent and Mersey Canal through Sarson's Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 1610570.jpg |
English: Trent and Mersey Canal through Sarson's Bridge. Bridge No 11 carries a farm track but no public way.
The Trent and Mersey Canal, initially engineered by James Brindley, was opened in 1777, five years after his death. It is 93 miles in length from Preston Brook to Derwent Mouth, and there are 76 locks. These are almost fifteen feet wide from Derwent Mouth to Stenson (both Derbyshire), though other restrictions limit this part of the canal to wider boats only up to ten feet in beam* as far as Horninglow Basin in Burton-on-Trent. West of Stenson, the rest of the locks are narrow, at just over seven feet.
