Summary
[edit]DescriptionTrent and Mersey Canal at Shardlow, Derbyshire - geograph.org.uk - 1617930.jpg |
English: Trent and Mersey Canal at Shardlow, Derbyshire. Shardlow was a busy river port even before the Trent and Mersey Canal was authorised in 1766. Construction started in that year under the supervision of James Brindley. The route from Derwent Mouth (a mile from here) to the Bridgewater Canal near Manchester allowed passage via Runcorn to the River Mersey, and was fully open by 1777. The section through Shardlow was open and in operation by 1770. |
