Description
English: Tremolitic talc schist from the Precambrian of New York State, USA.

Talc schist is a metamorphic rock dominated by the mineral talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 - magnesium hydroxysilicate). Its color usually ranges from mottled, creamy white to mottled gray to light green. It has a pearly luster and a slick, soapy feel. Talc schist, like soapstone and steatite and the mineral talc itself, is very soft (H = 1). Unlike soapstone and steatite, which are crystalline-textured, talcose metamorphic rocks, talc schist has a foliated texture (visible when viewed on edge). Some talc schists formed by hydrothermal metamorphism of dolomitic marbles. Other talc schists are produced by hydrothermal metamorphism of serpentinized peridotites.

This talc schist has a fair amount of a whitish-colored type of amphibole called tremolite (Ca2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2 - calcium magnesium hydroxysilicate).

The sample comes from the northwestern Adirondack Mountains of New York State. Metamorphic dates for talcose and tremolitic rocks in this area are about 1.1 billion years. They were metamorphosed from their precursors during the Grenville Orogeny, an ancient collisional mountain-building event. The Grenville Mountains extended from Quebec to Texas, at least. The Grenville Orogeny was a Rodinia Supercontinent-forming event.
