from Cuttings.Many trees can begrown from cuttingsmuch more easily thanthey can be propagatedfrom the seed. Suchdeciduous trees as thewillow and cottonwoodwill often grow from alimb broken off andstuck in moist soil. Wellprepared cuttings ofthese and of elm, maple,sycamore and mulberryare very easily rooted inboxes of sand. vSet theboxes in a cool, shadyplace until the cut endshave calloused over withyoung cambium tissue.Then place in partialshade so as to start thebuds. Cuttings of olive,fig and citrus trees canbe started in the sameway. The coast redwoodsuckers very profuselyfrom stumps and roots.Young suckers from aroot will root readily ifthey are cut seven-eighths through at pointof union with the root.After the roots are wellstarted, which takes sev-eral weeks, the sproutscan be lifted and placedin tin cans. Use waterfreely. This has already been demonstrated by Mr. H. A. Greeneas a practical method of reforestation. Figure (4) shows such aroot less than one year after planting.

Pines, cypress, eucalyptus,acacias, oranges and in fact almost any young tree seedlings will dieif kept too moist. They are usually destroyed by a mold- or mildew-like growth which develops in cool, moist weather. To prevent suchloss watch the weather and water accordingly and always water in themorning, not at night. Never let seed or seedlings get dry but donot water if they are moist and the weather is damp. In humidregions or places where the fungi seem to develop in spite of carefulwatering and free circulation of air, it will pay to sterilize the soilwith weak formaldehyde solution two or three weeks before plant-ing, stirring the soil occasionally so it will dry out.
