e may have supposed thatthe scale upon which a model is madeshould be without any fractional parts. And, as a necessary consequence, itmay be more readily understood. ButI have never been able to discover suchadvantage. Whenever calculations areto be made, it is certainly much moreconvenient to deal in round numbers ;and to do this we may divide the footinto tenths; the scale assumed is asmall fraction more than the $ of afoot : and to divide the foot into 40equal parts, would be the correct modeof proceeding, as it will be discoveredthat were a sufficient number of x; ad-ded together, we would not find thescale to be the exact ratio, as 40 timesa would make 121 inches; but havingadopted this scale as approximating thenearest to the scale in general use ; andat the same time a very near approxi-mation to the truth, it was deemedprudent to adopt the course as bettercalculated to illustrate the leading prin-ciples, than another scale that could notbe found marked on the rule in genera) .

It may be well to remark further, that in making models to build, or tomake calculations from, it is alwaysbest to make a scale on a slip of paper, and if the practitioner is not sufficient-ly skilled in the use of the drawing-pen, he would realize the time wellspent in learning its use. When wehave lost the scale by which a model ismade, the model is of no use unless thescale is known. Thus we have thekey, and no man can, without muchdifficulty, make use of the model ordrawing, without this key. It will bereadily discovered, that if the scale isaltered after the model is made, that itdisproportions the vessel; and that bydeparting from the dimensions we losethe shape. For example, if the scalebe increased from ~ to ~, or;, (the scalein general use) we diminish the size ofthe vessel. But this is not all; we alterthe principal dimensions, and thus, byincreasing the scale, we diminish thesize of the vessel; and, by diminishingthe scale, while the mod
