Prospect Park.—The legislation lead-ing to the formation of this beautifulpark began in 1859, though the originalplan was exceedingly meager in its pro-visions. The site of this park is one ofsurprising natural beauty, with magnifi-cent views embracing every variety ofprospect and scenery. The rich soil iscovered in summer with a luxuriant growthof plants and flowers; stately forest treeswave in the breeze; hillocks, lakes, andwater-courses lend the charms of ruralscenery; while art, with lavish expendi-tureuhas been introduced to supply withexquisite sculpture and multipliedadornments all that can please the eyeand enrich the mind. The park contains550 acres, and had cost in 1871 nine mill-ions. 25 acres are devoted to zoologicalgardens. Its tasteful arbors, terraces,exquisite bridges, music-stands, skatingponds, winding pedestrian and carriageways, in magnificence equal those of Cen-tral Park, New York. The value of tax-able
