Title
Treasure case 2012 T191, addenda Roman coins (86) and pottery fragments from Doncaster, South Yorkshire
Description
English: 86+8 (+ 310 original find) AR denarii and pot fragments to AD 176. BM ref: 2012 T191; 2015 T156. PAS ref: SWYOR-OA6163;

Circumstances of discovery: First addenda of 86 coins found by[name removed] with the aid of a metal detector, 12.03.2012 and second (eight coins marked *) donated in 2015. These coins form addenda to Antonine denarius hoard 2005 T418 (310 denarii and eighteen sherds of Roman coarse ware pottery found by [names removed] with the aid of a metal detector, 2.10.05). Total now stands at 404 denarii. With the first addenda a closer tpq of AD 175 was supplied by a late coin of Marcus Aurelius, TR P XXIX; the second contained two lifetime coins of Faustina II slightly amending the tpq to 176.

Note: Conservation resources have allowed a more thorough restoration of the condition of the addenda coins than the original find, allowing the full identifications below. The original 310 denarii were examined in largely illegible condition and only a summary could be made at the time, which is reproduced here. Conservation was managed by Pippa Pearce and team member Rebecca Bennett has also created images of the coins as part of a conservation project.

Pottery found with the coins by J. D. Hill.
Eighteen sherds of Roman coarse ware pottery were recovered with the original find of coins. These come from at least two different grey ware vessels. It is not clear from the sherds which of these vessels contained the coins, if at all, as there is no clear trace of green patina that often comes from contact with coins. It is possible these sherds do not come from pottery vessels directly associated with the hoard, but are evidence for other Roman activity at the same location.
Pottery found with the addenda coins. A further six sherds of the same courseware pottery were found with the addenda coins, including one base fragment.

Disposition The finder and landowner have generously donated the find to Doncaster Museum to join the original find.
