The ancient Egyptians used to eat hyaenas, andthe scenes in the early tombs show them beingfattened up in the farms. Men are seen flingingthe unfortunate creatures on their backs, theirlegs being tied, while others force goose-flesh downtheir throats. Probably the archaic hunter in thedesert ate hyaena-flesh for want of other meat,and the custom took hold amongst the sportingfamilies of dynastic times ; for with proper feedingthere is no reason to suppose that the meat wouldbe objectionable. The old guide told me, as wesat in the darkness, that there are several trapperswho make their living by snaring hyaenas, andthere is no part of the animal which has not amarketable value. The skin has its obvious uses ;the skull is sold as a charm, and brings luck toany house under the threshold of which it isburied ; the fat is roasted and eaten as a greatdelicacy; and the flesh is also used for eating, andfor medical purposes, certain parts being steweddown and swallowed by women who desire to
