e transit, the road was for the momentsafe, but we were told that it was usually brigand-ridden, and in our passage over the dusty plain wescarcely met a living creature. About two hours fromDiakovo we forded the river Drina, close to a highbridge of many arches, said to have been originallybuilt by the Serbian King Milutin. The khan wherein we halted was wretched, its onlyseparate room serving for a hen-roost, and neither innor near it did we see any signs of traffic. During the 450 DIAKOYO TO PUIZEEN. (chap. XXX. afternoon we rode round the foot of a little hill, bearingon its side a Mahometan village with its mosque,in the vicinity of which are said to be vineyards thatbelonged to the Serbian kings. Every object has nowits legend connecting it with the monarchs who heldtheir residence in this neighbourhood ; for our road isonce more leaving the plain for the hills, and as itturns the summit of the first rising ground we comein sight of the town of Peizren, ancient capital ofSerbia.

OITUATED on the northern slope of the Shaar Pla-^ nina, the town now called Prizren-in-Albania, con-tains only about four thousand houses,* and is withoutpolitical or commercial importance. To the left, theriver Drina passes on its way to the Adriatic ; around,lie the plains of Metochia and Kossovo; behind, risemountains rich in wood and ore ; but the Drina is notat present navigable; the field, though fertile, is nevercultivated; the hill-forest is so much cover for brigands.One asks for an explanation of this state of things,and one hears that the lord of the land is a Maho-metan, a foreigner, and far off; he cares not todevelop the resources of a remote and hostile pro-vince, it is enough if he can hold it down; and forlack of better instruments, he uses the arm of theArnaout to break the arm of the Serb.
