But although the OrthodoxChurch in Bosnia is still dependent upon the authorityof the Greek Patriarch at Constantinople, an arrangementwas made with him in 1879 by which his nominationsto Bosnian bishoprics were subject to the approval of theAustrian Emperor. A general purification of religiouslife and a higher standard of theological attainmentsliave followed this change, and though difficulties some-times arise, as at Mostar last year, the Orthodox clergyis yearly becoming better educated—a great advantagein an Eastern country where religion plays such a largepart in all the relations of hfe.
