Each house has a large allotment ofground behind it, extending in some instances to several acres, which isrichly cultivated, divided by quince, lemon, or pomegranate hedges, and laidout in orchards, gardens, and vineyards. These are all watered by a canalfrom the Sunday River, M-hich branches out into a number of small channels,and each inhabitant receives his due portion at a regular hour. This canalhas been greatly improved, or rather constructed anew, on a much higherlevel, by the present Landdrost, who, by indefatigable exertion and entirelyat his own risk, has carried it along the front of a rocky precipice, and bythese means gained a large addition of arable ground, and a more certain andabundant supply of water.
