It i This has been identified by Prof. D. Oliver with the Chusquea aristata ofMunro,—a reedy grass which is only known to grow in this region. 2 A rather fine-grained micaceous gneiss. The slaty formation is evidentlydue to a rough cleavage traversing the rock, on the planes of which a silvery micahas been rather largely developed. . . The structure of the rock is perplexing :it must undoubtedly be classed with the crystalline schists, but I suspect thatthe very marked schistosity is a secondary development due to crushing.—Prof. T.G. WE ARE TICKLED. 243 was almost the only spot where it was possible to camp, and itafforded good protection on one side, of which we were glad, asthere were numerous tracks of bears, pumas andother wild-beasts about. The lurch forward of thecliff prevented rain falling directly upon us, unlessit blew from the north-east; but everything burn-able was dripping with moisture,1 and the sur-rounding land was so wet that water oozed or evensquirted out in jets when it was trodden upon.Corrector Machai was placed on the southern side ofa small valley, descending north-west, with severaldepressions (passes ?) at its head. At mid - day despatched two men across thevalley to advance provisions in the direction inwhich we supposed Sara-urcu was situated.
