Text Appearing Before Image:
^ piey still lay where hehad dropped, or nearly so. He regarded meattentively, but did not rise until I got prettynearly up to him, when he rose very stiffly. Ithen gave him another shot, which, owing to myhorses uneasiness, missed him, and the woundedanimal, realising what was up, set his head downand came at us like a miniature buffalo, at asgood a pace as he could with his shattered leg.Wildebeest are remarkably savage, and theircurious set of horns and shaggy front make themlook specially ferocious. My horse did not likehis appearance at all, and I had quite a job toload and manage him. At last, however, I gotanother cartridge in and ended the poor creaturesmisery, for the splintered shank bone was stickingright out through the flesh.
Text Appearing After Image:
DESERT HLXTIXG. 87 Whilst riding back with him shing across mysaddle-pommel, I shot at and wounded a leopardwhich was skulking among the thorn bushes. But although I dismounted and followed thebloody spoor for some distance, I eventually lostall trace of him. Next day I continued thehunting, but I never saw anything more of him.Referring to leopards reminds me of an escapadeI had with one of these creatures some timepreviously, further south. As is so frequentlythe case, I had been much disturbed during thenight by prowling animals, which I found outwere leopards. I was exasperated by the lossof my best dog, and made up my mind, if pos-sible, to get a fine skin and avenge his deathat one and the same time; so making a hurriedbreakfast, and leaving my two kaffir boys incharge of the skerm, I set out with the onlydog I now had left. The spoor, which was plainenough in the sand, led right away towards theriver, which on either side is bordered for aquarter of a mile or so with wait-a-bit
