A detour on my way to Las Vegas to finish 2012. My travels earlier in 2012 had taken me to Boeing's widebody assembly plant in Everett, Washington, where new airplanes are born; now I am at a place where the Everett planes come to retire and die. Here is my Hyundai Genesis, which had indeed taken me to Everett, not to mention the Canadian Rockies and other places. The aircraft that wears the United Airlines' Battleship Gray paint is City of Chicago, registration N606UA, the very first Boeing 767 in revenue service in 1982. She had been a valuable past travel companion of mine, serving out her later years on dedicated premium transcontinental service between New York City and Los Angeles. That route used to be the mainstay of my air travel in the 1990s, and when I flew that route for the very last time in 2003, City of Chicago was indeed the one flying me. I will need to continue traveling into 2013 and beyond - by car, by air, or otherwise. More stories (including those about new travel companions) are still waiting to be written. |
