bringing this little talkbefore you was to interest you people in setting up such an apparatus,any sort of apparatus, and actually put different chemicals in the arc,and see how many varieties of phenomena can be obtained, a varietyof phenomena which will go far to getting at a great many secretsthat are now concealed in nature. Of course, in turn, there are any number of industrial applica-tions of these things that have not been worked out that lie justaround the corner, as you might say. There are a great many thingsthat lie in the future of the development of the arc that have not beenstudied at all. Several years ago I worked out an impregnated solid carbon thatI could run at 2 to 4 amperes without slagging, and which gave anefficiency on direct current about four times that of the old type arc.You run into such a diversity of phenomena, such a wonderful fieldof experiments in all sorts of ways, that I want to encourage you,gentlemen, to play with the arc. 188 AdvertisingSection
