N O T E S ON A L B E RBURY.By H. M. AIJDEN. F.R.Hist.S. Mr. Eyton in his Antiquities of Shropshire speaks of theparish of Alberbury as having a history of surpassing interest. He refers mainly to it in connection with the feudal system, but the history of the district goes back to far earlier times. The old parish was of huge extent, stretching from the Crossdates, five miles from Shrewsbury, to Middletown, five fromWelshpool, and from the Severn at Llandrinio Bridge to thecrest of the Long Mountain, taking in nearly the whole of the Breiddep group of hills, and extending almost to Yockletonand Westbury. Ford and Cardeston were mediaeval chapel-ties within its area, and Criggion and Great Wollastonremained dependent on Alberbury Church till modern times. In early days much lighting raged on and about the naturalstronghold of the Brcidden, as is witnessed by the earth-works upon it and the Middletown Hill or the Cefn-y-Castell,to give it a le^s prosaic name.
