Rf! SHROPSHIRE EARTHWORKS. 167 oval earthwork with several lines of defence. The centraldivision, specifically called Pontcsford Hill on the Ordnancemaps, rises to about 950 feet, and is separated from thesouthern division by a saddle of slightly lower elevation.This last division, called Earls Hill .on the maps, has an altitude of 1,047 feet, and is crowned by a magnificent earthworkwith a single line of defence. The work is divided into twoportions, a principal enclosure encircling the summit, and asouthern extension at a somewhat lower level ; there is alsoan outwork situated north of the principal enclosure upon apart of the central division of the hill.
