called variously Colun, Colon,Colum, and by the Britons Caer Coiun. To the south ofthat town was a monastery of Augustine Canons, founded inthe reign of Hen. I. (noo to 1135), and dedicated to St.Julian and St. Bodolph, by Ernulphus or Eynulphus, whoafterwards became prior. These Canons were brought intothis kingdom about the year 1109. This House (at Col-chester) was the first of that order in England, as appears bythe Bull of Pope Paschal II., directed to Ernulph and hisbrethren, dated in Aug. 1116. Some indeed have affirmedthat St. Gregorys in Canterbury was the first, and othershave placed them at Nosthel in Yorkshire, or at Trinitywithin Aldgatc, London; but, as Mr. J, Stevens well observes,this point is fully determined by Pope Paschals Bull in 1116,who, living so near the time, could not be misinformed, or, ifhe had, the monastery in England, that had been before it,would have claimed the precedence. ...
