n the south-west corner of the house, but onlya few of the stone steps remain in the upper part. There areindications of no less than three strong doors having onceexisted at different points on the staircase, fastened withbolts, the middle one having a massive wooden bar, whichpasses through the wall of the room into the outer wall onthe opposite side of the staircase.- Some antiquaries havesupposed that the lowest storey was used in war-like timesfor the purpose of securing the cattle when in danger, whilethe upper storeys formed the dwelling-place of the family ;this, however, is an improbable theory, as the space would befar too restricted for such a purpose ; and also there would, 1 tt is evidently composed of stones worked for an arch of different dimen- ■si jus, from the irregularity of the intervals at which the ball-flower ornamentoccurs. — IJ. - The three doors are in the thickness of the wall, and tie loopholes by whichthe a.-;;out i> bathed arc* in a projection. —

I UPPER MILLICHOPE. 127 probably, have been a strongly-fenced paddock or enclosureadjacent to the house, into which the cattle could be drivenfor security. A correspondent of the Salopian and West Midland Illus-trated Joiinnd, Mr. \V. ((. ?) Randal, writing of Upper Millie-hope in 187S, gave a detailed account of a visit to the house,with plans of the ground-floor and windows. He says (interalia) : - The roof is covered with the well-known tile-stonesof the neighbourhood, which are lichened and tinted intoharmony with the scenery around ; their weight has causedthe timber to bend and the roof to bulge. A red brick farm-house adjoins the old building on the right, which though byno means very modern, serves to set off the extreme age of itsvenerable neighbour. Mr. James, the present tenant, kindlyallowed us to enter, and accompanied us over the building.A light was necessary to examine the interior, and measurethe thickness of the walls.
