-lying strip at the base of the cliffs is araised rock platform—an uplifted incipient plain of marine denudation(Plate XXXV, and fig. 2, a) : the remaining portion—situated principally atthe seaward ends of the larger valleys opening into Porirua Harbour near itsentrance—has been formed by the progradation of the shore brought aboutby the deposition of a superabundance of coarse waste which has beendrifted down the outer coast and into Porirua Harbour and has beenpiled up above sea-level, in the first instance by the action of the waves,and raised still farther by the earth-movement responsible for the upliftof the adjacent stretches of shore-platform of wave-planed rock. (2.) The Raised Shore-platform,(a.) On the Mainland. The raised shore-platform (Plate XXXV, and fig. 2, a) is one of the mostinteresting, and in some places also the most conspicuous, of the shore-line features of Porirua Harbour and of the neighbouring coast. Thesimilarity of the raised shore-platform and the raised beach-ridges ofthe Porirua area to the raised shore-platform fringing the shores of Mira-mar Peninsula at Port Nicholson, and to the 9 ft. beach (Crawford, 1869.pp. 320-21: Aston, 1912, p. 209; and writers observations) of Turakirae Head,respectively; in the latter localities these features have always been attri-buted to the uplift of 1855.
