Weeding and wHt^ring in S) 240 MASSACHUSETTS HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. George Putnam School Garden. A new impetus was given to the work in the George PutnamSchool garden in the spring of 1903 by the gift of live hundredpackages of flower seeds from Hon. Henry F. Naphen, Represen-tative to Congress and a resident of South Boston. Each of thepaper bags composing the five hundred contained packages offlower seeds, such as centaurea. eschscholzia. clarkia. nasturtium.
Text Appearing After Image:
Visit of the Normal School Girls. sweet pea. phlox, portulaca. calendula, calliopsis, cosmos, dian-thus. mignonette, and coreopsis, all of which are pretty sure toproduce beautiful flowers whose blossoming period is long. A gentleman who learned of this gift said: •• Well, there, that is a distribution of seeds that has amounted to something. The seeds have fallen into the right hands. I have been skepti-cal for years in regard to the free distribution of seeds fromWashington: but if it is to take this form I have nothing butcommendation for it.* GEORGE PUTNAM SCHOOL GARDEN. 241 Not onlv were the seeds given to the children who 1im<1 gardensat school, but to those who had them at home, or to those whomanifested interest enough in gardening to make a garden athome for the first time. This apparently insignificant gift of afew seeds furnished a motive far-reaching in its nature. In the first place the seeds were from a celebrated place.Washington, the Capital of the United States.
