ntinued during the holding of a fair in theneighbourhood, and that its place should be taken duringfair-time by a court held at the fair. There is evidence thatduring a period of fourteen days, commencing on the last dayof September, the Tolzey Court was discontmued, or ratherit seems to have been transferred with altered functions forthe time being, to the open street in Old Market. Up to thepresent time writs issued from the Tolzey Court Office duringthis period have the words held in the Old Market thereadded to the ordinary title of the Tolzey Court, and theproclamation of the opening of the court in Old Market isstill regularly made. The formality of opening the old court of the fair may bewitnessed m Old Market at ten oclock in the morning on thelast day of September in every year. The brief ceremony isso quickly over that it is scarcely noticed by most of thepassers-by. Nowadays the number of quaintceremonies whose performance can be traced back into thedim and remote past is becoming smaller and smaller, andit is worth attempting to appreciate the significance of thosethat survive. The annual incident in Old Market has lostits former elaborateness, but its essentials are preserved. Onthe pavement beneath the overhanging upper storeys of theold Stag and Hounds there stands at the appointed hourthe serjeant-at-mace of the Bristol Tolzey Court proclaimingthe holding of a Court of Pie Poudre.^ The officer makesproclamation in the following terms : All manner of personshaving anything to do at this Court of the Tolzey for theCity and County of Bristol held and kept here this day inthe Old Market, draw near and give your attendance.
