her of theDuchess of Beaufort. Some curiosity was expressed respecting thecottage in which John Locke, the philosopher, was born. It stood close tothe north gate leading into the churchyard, but was allowed to fall intodecay, and at length disappeared, a stone marking where it stood, thoughwe are informed the date of Lockes birth as stated there is incorrect. On resuming the journey, Dolebury Camp, with its great rampart of Banwell. 19 loose limestone blocks in some places 30 feet high, was seen in front;and two miles east of it was Beacon Batch on Black Down, the highestpoint of Mendip, 1,068 feet above the sea. The Bishops arms, with the canting motto, Godwyn, wyn God, wyn all, are built into themodern house. Banwell is about half-a-mile further on. The first certain mention made of Banwell appears in Assers accountof King Alfred. He relates that on a Christmas morning about 885 theKing gave to him two monasteries—one at Banwell, the other at Amesburyor Congresbury,—and also a-very precious silk pallium and as muchincense as a strong man could carry, no doubt for use in the service of the 2o Transactions for the Year 1902. Church. It is likely, however, that the estate given by Cuthred, Kingof the West Saxons, to Winchester Cathedral about 750, which nowappears as Banewada, was really Banwell. Probably King Alfred only
