nt Hortus KeivenfiSy.evidently belong to this clafs. I have fometimes imagined, that the plant which is themore immediate fuhje£t of this letter is alfoan hybrid. Itis, certainly, a beautiful example of a conneiling mediumbetween Podophylhitn and Sanquinaria. Its calix is fome-times three-leaved, which is the uniform number of theleaves of the calix of the Pcdophyllum. Thefe leaves, inboth plants, are coloured, and concave. The root of bothhas the fame fmell, and taRe. To the Sanguinaria., ourplant is related in the following charaifters. The calix, inboth, is fhorter than the corolla, and falls off before theexpanfion of the flower : the petals are eight in number :,the filaments are fhorter than the corolla : the ftigma is per--fiflent. But the relation of the Jefftrfonia to the two ge-nera, jufl; mentioned, is, perhaps, ftill greater than it ap-.-pears to be, from the mere circumflances which I havetaken notice of.
