In the trackupwards to Panama the winds are frequently found favourable, because thecourse lies principally in the well-lvuown belt of westerly winds. PromPanama we keep further north, through the heart of the easterly or tradewinds prevailing generally, though varying with the seasons, between theequator and the southern tropic. In this part of the voyage the winds areless favourable than the other, and particularly in the latter part. Trying toavoid the westerly or adverse winds which prevail further soiith, we adoptthis track, which brings us close to Eapa, from which, I fear, you will thinkJ have made too long a digression, RANS.N.Z.INSTITUTE,VOL.I.M.
