tinued itsexplosive activity and two other craters opened through thelava flow along a line of crustal weakness. These eruptionscontinued for perhaps two or three months, and then ceased, having built up three cones to an average height of 650 ft.,and covered 25 square miles with ash deposits. 6. Subsequently extensive collapse took place along theline of volcanic activity, and practically the whole of the threecinder cones caved in, forming great depressions, in thedeepest of which the waters of the sub-artesian basin formedlakes. 7. The origin of the water of the lakes is discussed, andalso the variation in the surface level, and suggestions areput forward regarding the rate of movement of the watersin this important sub-artesian basin. The close correlationbetween the annual rainfall and the variation in level of theunderground water supply has been graphically demonstrated. Thecliff on the far side shows clearly the level-bedded marine lime-stones (1), and the stratified volcanic material (2), while portionof the basalt flow separating these two series has been emphasizedby a broken line to show it more clearly. A thicker developmentof the basalt may be seen on the left, just beyond the pumpingstation. Fig. B.
