WestN©wmi«n3iCo.lith. i OPHTHALMOPLEGIA. 253 No other evidence of visceral syphilis was found, exceptsome doubtful changes in the liver, the superficial veinsof the right lobe being surrounded by fibrous tissue inapparent excess of the normal. The testes, spleen, &c.,were normal. There can, however, be little doubt as to the syphilitic nature of the lesion which produced hisocular symptoms. Microscopic examination showed it tobe of a chronic inflammatory nature, with tendency toform fibrous tissue, scattered about in which were groupsof small cells, * miliary gummata ^^—and vessels with ex-tremely thick walls. His history of the death in infancy or still-birth of allhis children, and the characters of his ulcer of the leg,pointed strongly to syphilis. On asking how far the results of the post-mortemexplained the symptoms during life, we have abundantexplanation of the nervous symptoms.
