The fre-quent occurrence of these eruptions wTould, in a measure, solvethe problem as to the manner in wThich the fragments of rocksvarying in size from pebbles to boulders, some with polishedsurfaces, became, as it were, waterworn. The evidence of the movement of the diamond-bearing rockafter solidifying is indicated by the slickensides and striatedsurfaces of the country-rocks at their junctions or contacts withthe kimberlite. Large sheets of calcite are frequently foundat the junction of these rocks, which have taken the form ofthe striae. Beautiful calcite crystals and transparent pieces ofdoubly-refracting, or Iceland spar, are of frequent occurrence. There is conclusive proof that the diamonds in the SouthAfrican mines are not found in their original place of crys-tallization, as is shown by the frequent occurrence of brokencrystals imbedded in the hard kimberlite.
