ent, and should in turndecrease as the combined carbon further increases. B. Combined Carbon Constant, Graphite Varies.—The graphiteby itself should weaken, soften and embrittle cast-iron. Scat-tering through the metal sheets of a wreak substance likegraphite should in effect break up the continuity of the mass,and this should both weaken and embrittle the mass as a wThole;and it should soften the mass somewhat, because graphite itselfis so soft.
