On thewestern edge of the Kansas coal-field the outcrop is againnoticeable, as at Osage City and Scranton, 75 miles from thedeepest operation. This curvature of the coal was no doubtcaused by a subsidence, the center of which, theoretically, wasin Iowa and Kansas, and after which the depression was filledand the surface leveled from the surrounding country.
