THE HANDLING OF MATERIAL AT THE BLAST-FURNACE. 27 cessfully operated at many places in this country, as well as in Europe.* The manner of handling ore at the Duquesne furnaces of theCarnegie Steel Co., Ltd., is clearly shown by illustrations, Figs.19, 20, and 21, for the use of which I am indebted to Mr.Alexander E. Brown, of the Brown Hoisting and ConveyingMachine Co. The gantry cranes, or bridge-tramway machines,are operated by electricity. They have a clear span of 233feet, covering the stock-yard, and a cantilever extension of 33feet additional, covering the trestle-tracks. The bridges willclear a stock-pile 58 feet high. These cranes remove the orefrom the cars, depositing it in the stock-yard, using for thispurpose self-tipping ore-tubs; or, they carry the ore from thestock-pile to the charging-hoppers. For this work automaticshovels, designed and patented by the Brown Hoisting andConveying Machine Co., take the place of the self-clumpingore-tubs shown in these illustrations. Th
