eceived from Sir Roderick Murchison an ap-pointment upon the Geological Survey. During five years hewas engaged in field-work, first on the Wealden beds in Kentand Sussex, and then in Derbyshire and Yorkshire. At thistime his evenings were largely devoted to reading for a degreefrom London University. In 1861 he matriculated, obtainingthe Bachelor of Science in 1863, with honors in biology and aUniversity scholarship in geology; in 1864 he passed the twoexaminations entitling him to the Bachelor of Arts degree, andin 1865 he received the degree of Doctor of Science. In 1865 he succeeded Mr. Richard Pearce as lecturer to theMiners Association of Cornwall and Devon. At the same timehe became the curator to the museum of the Royal GeologicalSociety of Cornwall at Penzance, a member of the council in1873, and a life-member in 1874; he made frequent donationsto the museum, besides contributing several valuable papers to * Published also in the Engineering and Mining Journal, June 30, 1904.
