THE CORNWALL IRON-ORE MINES, LEBANON COUNTY, PA. 875 body of each hill, now extensively removed by quarrying down tothe water-level of Furnace Creek. But the quantity of ore stillremaining above water-level is much greater than that removed,and in several places the original surface is still untouched, whilebeneath water-level the ore is known (by borings) to descend to adepth exceeding 300 feet. The extreme length of the uncovered ore-deposit is about 4400 feet;its breadth in Big Hill about 400 feet, in Middle Hill 800 feet, andin Grassy Hill 600 feet; and its total area is estimated at nearly 63acres. The north and west brow of Grassy Hill, the north brow ofMiddle Hill, and the north, east and south brow of Big Hill is anoutcrop of dolerite trap. The sloping trap dike is exposed onthe opposite sides of each of the two gaps, descending from the hilltops to water-level, with an apparent width of about 100 feet.
