f the fine ironor steel, add 150 c. c. of the double chloride of copper and ammo-nium solution ; stir the solution frequently, and after a few minutesapply a gentle heat (50° or 60° C). When the iron and precipitatedcopper are dissolved, add a few drops of HC1 to dissolve the thinfilm of oxide of iron, which has formed on the surface. The carbonis now collected in the funnel N, which is loosely stopped with asmall quantity of asbestos. Hot water is first run through the filter, then the solution ; the residue is washed once with the double chlo-ride, and then with hot water, until the wash-water gives withAgN03 no reaction of chlorine. The funnel is then broken intothree pieces, by scratching at d and e with a file and applying a hotiron, and the pieces, with the carbonaceous residue, are introducedinto flask D. The whole apparatus is now carefully connected, andthe aspirator set running ; valves 1 and 3 being open and 2 closed, 376 MANGANESE, CARBON, AND PHOSPHORUS IN IRON AND STEEL

After standing thirty minutes disconnect K and L andweigh them. Re-connect K and L, close valves 1 and 2, removethe cork, a, and, by means of a funnel, introduce into C 90 c. c. ofthe solution of CrOs and H2S04; insert cork, a, open valve 3, andstart the aspirator. As soon as air-bnbbles commence comingthrough K, open valve 1 and allow the solution to flow graduallyinto D. Now close valve 1 and apply heat to D ; shake D care-fully to insure thorough contact of its contents, and continue theheat till white fumes appear, or to incipient ebullition. Removethe lamp and gradually open valve 1 till wide open ; when theaspirator O is half empty, open valve 3 so that the air-bubbles willcome over more rapidly. At first the bubbles should not comethrough faster than three in a second, and at no time fast enough tothrow the potas
