With the above anti-breakage boxes, to attain the maximumefficiency during shipment, the speed of loading should not ex-ceed 100 tons per hour. It is claimed that 150 tons per hour hasbeen loaded; but, as the boxes only hold about 1£ tons, thisequals 100 double trips per hour or nearly 2 per minute, atwhich rate it seems impossible to take full advantage of theanti-breakage part of the boxes, that is, of the coal being tipped afew feet below the shoot. These various forms of anti-breakage box are all dislikedby the workmen, and consequently are often dispensed with;and, when used, only about the first 50 tons of each cargo ishandled in this way, after which the ordinary spout-teeming isadonted.
