Title |
Tranchet Axehead |
||
Description |
English: A possible tranchet axe. A small, irregularly flaked flint axe with an apparent failed tranchet sharpening at the cutting edge. Pale grey and beige flint with a heavy chalky off-white patina and iron staining. Both long edges are extensively flaked from both faces, creating a ridged lozengiform cross section. One long edge is straight, the other is slightly wavy. It has a narrow, tapered butt. The opposite end has some edge damage and the cutting edge may have been more flared. There is a small flake removal at one edge. but the flake did not travel far enough across to create a proper "tranchet"cutting edge. Date: Late Mesolithic - c. 7000 - 4000 BC |
